Whisky Advent Calendar Day 24: Glenfarclas 40 Year Old

Hint on the window: Creamy malt

Creamy indeed! I knew the calendar was saving something special for the final day, the last hurrah. And I was not disappointed when I opened up Day 24 and discovered a 40 year old Glenfarclas.

This 40 year old comes with a bright, balanced, rich nose with a whiff of chocolate. The body is well integrated and smooth, the wood tannins are delightful. Finally, as all good things must come to and end the finish is deep, woody and long.

This is a welcome new addition to the Glenfarclas family of whiskies. It offers all of the sherried Glenfarclas character and exceptional maturity, having been distilled way back in the 1960s.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day 23: Yamazaki 12 Year Old

Hint on the window: Honeyed butterscotch

Here's one I've had before. One of Japan's finest whiskies! This is a fanstastic whisky, definitely one I will be adding to my collection one day soon. While the finish is short, it makes up for it with a smooth delivery onto the palate.

The Nose is sweet as Christmas candy commingling with blood orange, breakfast cereal and chocolate. It's immediately impressive before the first sip. No secrets here - it's not the most layered whisky, but you know exactly what you're getting.
The Body is rich and deep with a beautiful integration of smoke, orange zest and bitter wood.
The Finish reminded me of sharp wood, one last kick of orange zest and maybe some grapefruit. Overall, a fantastic whisky.
